Whetting the Appetite of Penangnites:
The Pakistan Mangoes Exhibition to present Chaunsa and Sindhri

PENANG (June 27, 2000):  Jointly organized by the Export Promotion Bureau of Pakistan and the High Commission for Pakistan, the Pakistan Mangoes Exhibition seeks to familiarize Penangnites with the interesting facts about and fun ways to enjoy Pakistan mangoes.

The Exhibition was launched by Deputy Chief Minister of Penang, YB Dato’ Dr Hilmi Bin Haji Yahaya at the Berjaya Georgetown Hotel today.  Also present was the Commercial Counsellor of the Pakistan High Commission Mr Athar Jamal Abro and other dignitaries.

A seven member-strong delegation of major mangoes exporters have flown in from Pakistan to showcase the best of their produce at the two day-exhibition cum fruit-tasting in Penang, open to members of the public on June 27 and 28, 2000.

A booth was set up at the Tops Supermarket at One Stop Midlands Complex, for the public to sample the taste of Chaunsa and Sindhri, the two species of Pakistan mangoes highlighted at this promotion.  They are selected among the many varieties grown in Pakistan for their superb taste and look.

According to Mr Athar Jamal Abro, Commercial Counsellor of the Pakistan High Commission, the exhibition was an eye-opener.  “While Pakistan mangoes are no strangers to Malaysians, we’ll use this opportunity to provide the Malaysian public with information on the distinct appearance, taste, smell and feel of the individual species of mangoes grown in Pakistan,” said Mr Abro.

“Among the 75 mango exporting and re-exporting countries in the world, Pakistan is the third on the list.  As the third largest international supplier of mango, Pakistan has achieved a wonderful growth of mango export, from 18.3 thousand tonnes in 1996 to 40.2 thousand tonnes in 1998, equivalent to 119% increase,” Mr Abro added.  “As far as Pakistan mangoes are concerned, we are working towards a bigger share of the Asian markets, and Malaysia is high on the list of target markets for us to develop.”

Meanwhile, the Exhibition provides a platform for the Pakistan exporters of fresh fruits to meet with Malaysian fruit traders for forging close business ties.  “The stage has been set.  The recent Budget in Pakistan has proved to be a blessing for exporters; we expect the various trade incentives announced to be translated into real export growth,” Mr Abro said.

“Given the distinct flavour of the large varieties of Pakistan mangoes available, they will be ideal choice for the many food processing facilities in Penang,” Mr Abro concluded.  “We are confident that the demand of Pakistan mangoes in Malaysia will continue to soar, in both the industrial and retail sectors.”

Each year, Pakistan produces a total of 1million tonnes of mangoes for worldwide and local consumption.
